  15. <p>     DIED. DEREK JARMAN, 52, avant-garde filmmaker; of AIDS; in London.
  16. After beginning as a set and costume designer for ballet, opera
  17. and films like Ken Russell's The Devils, Jarman started his
  18. career as a director with Sebastiane (1975), a homoerotic look
  19. at the martyred saint. Jarman's later works include last year's
  20. spare, philosophical biopic Wittgenstein and the minimalist
  21. Blue--featuring a single 76-minute solid-blue shot and the
  22. sound of three actors reciting Jarman's thoughts on his illness.
