- <p> DIED. DEREK JARMAN, 52, avant-garde filmmaker; of AIDS; in London.
- After beginning as a set and costume designer for ballet, opera
- and films like Ken Russell's The Devils, Jarman started his
- career as a director with Sebastiane (1975), a homoerotic look
- at the martyred saint. Jarman's later works include last year's
- spare, philosophical biopic Wittgenstein and the minimalist
- Blue--featuring a single 76-minute solid-blue shot and the
- sound of three actors reciting Jarman's thoughts on his illness.
